"I am eternally grateful for what Emma has taught me...including the skills that I still use to this day in my  career and personal life. Emma created fun environments even when it involved studying. She was also a driving force to make me into the mediator I was and it paid off as I was awarded Number 1 Best Individual Mediator in the International Mediation Competition in 2017."

Phoebe Dearden
"Emma has a great passion for mediation which really helps to engage students in learning the great skills that can be developed through mediation training. She helps students to really focus on improving their skills and encourages them to keep practising these, building their confidence, and enabling them to be the best mediator they can be."

Setting up a Mediation Clinic

A mediation clinic is an educational and community interest project. The service providers are trained students and the users are students across the University and the local community.

Benefits for the student providers:

  • Invaluable practical experience
  • The opportunity to put theory into practice in real-life scenarios
  • Enhanced employability
  • Shows diversity beyond the degree
  • Important transferable skills can be practiced and improved
  • Extra curricular activity that appeals to potential employers
  • Experience a process that is current and valuable
  • Gain professionalism prior to entering working life

Benefits to the user:

  • It is a free service so there is nothing to lose
  • Dealing with disputes in a constructive and positive manner
  • A more harmonious campus and community
  • Avoids the cost, length of time and stress of litigation
  • Future steps are agreed rather than dictated
  • A therapeutic and empowering process
  • Support in dealing with conflict
  • Retention of happier students

A student clinic user said, "I had a dispute with another student in a presentation group which was affecting my work...I had lost all hope...I really would like to thank the Mediation Clinic for helping me through such a difficult situation."

A Mediation Clinic can clearly have a huge impact both for students acting in the clinic and the service users.
